Artificial Eyes are a cosmetic treatment for individuals that have experienced loss or disfigurement to their natural eye. They create a balanced facial appearance by assisting the eye socket to return to its natural volume, increase comfort and enhance confidence. While the purpose of a Prosthetic Eye or Scleral Shell are the same, which of the two individual may require is dependent on their circumstances:
Prosthetic Eye
For individuals who have lost their eye due to injury or illness. It connects to the surgical implant inputted by an Opthamologist.
Scleral Shell
For individuals that have a disfigurement or loss of vision to their natural eye.
Our sizing and fitting process is carefully tailored to ensure every patient receives a prosthetic eye designed specifically for them. While most patients find their prosthesis comfortable, it is normal to experience a short period of adjustment - especially if it's your first. Staying in touch with your ocularist and attending follow-up appointments is essential to optimise comfort, fit, and long-term eye health.
As per our care and maintenance guide, we recommend regular cleaning with hypo-allergenic soap or an approved cleaning solution. Our Ocularists complete training with every patient to provide specific guidance and instructions based on every individuals condition.
Our Prosthetic Eye's are custom made and are typically produced in three appointments. However, as our aim to supply all our patients with a prosthesis that meets their satisfaction, more appointments may be required if adjustments are requested or for more complex cases.
With proper care and maintenance, a prosthetic eye or scleral shell typically lasts between 5 to 7 years. However, every individual is different - if you experience discomfort, changes in fit, discolouration, or notice a difference in appearance, it's important to book a review appointment. Your ocularist can assess whether it's time for a replacement to maintain comfort and a natural look.
